What is a smartOne® Visa® Gift Card?
The smartOne Visa Gift Card is a prepaid Visa Card purchased just for you! The Gift Card is not a credit card. It carries a fixed cash amount that you can use anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. You can use your card to shop from catalogs, use it in restaurants, retail stores and even place orders on the web.

How does it work?

You can use your Gift Card just like a regular Visa debit card. Push “credit” at the point-of-sale terminal and sign the receipt. Because the card does not come with a PIN, pushing “debit” will cause the card to decline. Every time you use the card, the purchase amount and any applicable user fees are deducted from the available balance until that balance reaches zero. Once the entire gift amount has been spent, the Gift Card can no longer be used as a method of payment.

How do I know how much is left on my Gift Card?

It’s easy to keep track of what’s left on the card. Just log on to www.smartonegiftcard.com or call customer service anytime at 1-866-770-2170.

Can I make a purchase that is more than the amount remaining on the Gift Card?

You can use the Gift Card to make a purchase of any amount. Know your card balance before you shop, as merchants can’t determine the balance on your card. Tell the cashier that you would like to use two forms of payment. Present your Gift Card and state the amount to be used from that card. Then pay the cashier the difference with a second form of payment – cash, credit, or check. For example, if the remaining value of your Gift Card is $25 and you want to make a $30 purchase, just tell the cashier that you want to place $25 of the total purchase on your Gift Card, then pay the remaining $5 of the purchase with cash.

Can I add more money to the Gift Card?

Once the entire amount is spent, the Gift Card can no longer be used as a method of payment. However, it’s easy to order a new card by ordering online at www.smartonegiftcard.com.

What if the purchase is denied?

Know your card balance before you shop. The available balance on the Gift Card is probably less than the total purchase amount. State the amount you would like the cashier to use on your Gift Card and use another form of payment to pay the remainder of the purchase total. Please be aware that the use of the smartOne Visa Gift Card at some merchants—for example, hotels, restaurants and mail-order companies—may factor in tips or other expenses into the purchase total and may require you to have an available balance of up to 20% above the purchase amount. If this occurs, ask the cashier to deduct a specific amount from your Gift Card and use another form of payment for the remainder of the balance. Additionally, your Gift Card may not be accepted at automated gas pumps, but you can pay for your gas purchase with the station attendant rather than swiping your card at the pump.

What if there are still funds available when my Gift Card expires?

We encourage you to use the entire gift amount before the card expires. Any balance remaining would be returned less a $25 closure fee (or the remaining balance if it is less than $25) deducted from the card balance. Funds will be distributed by check within ten to twelve weeks.

How long can I use my Gift Card?

You may make purchases up to two years after the card issue date. However, a monthly maintenance fee of $2.50 will be assessed beginning in the seventh month after the card issue date, continuing until the value is depleted or until the expiration date on the card.

Can I use my Gift Card at an ATM?

smartOne Visa Gift Cards cannot be used for withdrawing cash at an ATM.

What if my Gift Card is ever lost or stolen?

Immediately report any problems or a lost or stolen card by calling 1-866-770-2170. You can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A replacement card will be sent to you less a $10 reissue fee that will be deducted from the card balance. As long as the lost or stolen card is reported immediately, you will not be responsible for any unauthorized charges.

Can the card ever have a negative balance?

Any authorization request greater than the card’s available balance will be declined. However, there can be times when a Visa merchant allows a purchase without prior authorization. To avoid any charge, you should always know the value on the card before making the purchase. If an overdraft occurs, you will be notified to make a payment directly to Cardholder Services to cover the negative amount.

What happens if I need to return an item?

Keep your Gift Card in case you need to return purchased items. Each Visa merchant location has its own return policies and will handle the returns in the same manner as any other Visa transaction. They may credit your smartOne Visa Gift Card, provide a cash refund or issue a store credit.

Gift Card Usage Tips

 Your smartOne® Visa® Gift Card can be used just like a normal Visa Card anywhere Visa Debit cards are accepted. These quick tips will help ensure the best experience using your Gift Card.

Using Your Gift Card (Hotels, Restaurants, and Gas Pumps)

You can use your Gift Card just like a regular Visa debit card. Push “credit” at the point-of-sale terminal and sign the receipt. Because the card does not come with a PIN, pushing “debit” will cause the card to decline. Every time you use the card, the purchase amount and any applicable fees are deducted from the available balance. Some retailers (hotels, restaurants, mail-order companies and cruise lines) require a Gift Card balance greater than the purchase amount to cover the potential cost of tips and other expenses. If your bill, plus the estimated tip or other expense, exceeds the amount on the Gift Card, it may be declined. If this occurs, ask the merchant to use your Gift Card for a smaller portion of the bill. Additionally, your Gift Card may not be accepted at automated gas pumps, but you can pay for your gas purchase with the station attendant rather than swiping your card at the pump.

Purchases Exceeding your Gift Card Balance

It’s easy to use your Gift Card for purchases that exceed the balance of your Gift Card. Be sure you know your balance prior to the purchase since the cashier may not be able to tell the balance on your card. Prior to your purchase, simply ask the cashier if he or she can put a specific dollar amount (less than or equal to your Gift Card’s remaining balance) on your Gift Card and then you can use another form of payment for the difference. If the retailer tries to use your Gift Card for a dollar amount greater than your available balance, the transaction will be declined.

If the transaction was declined and you have sufficient funds, contact a customer service representative at 1-866-770-2170 to determine why the transaction was declined.

Gift Card Expiration

Your Gift Card can be used up to two years as can be seen on the front of the card, but we recommend using your card soon after receiving it. While your Gift Card can be used for up to two years, beginning on the seventh month after issue date, a monthly maintenance fee of $2.50 will be deducted from your Gift Card’s account balance each month. After the two-year period, a check will be issued for your Gift Card’s remaining balance minus a $25 check fee. 

Online or Phone Purchases

Your smartOne   Visa Gift Card can be used for online or phone transactions, but you will need to be sure that your Gift Card account information (name, address, phone number) is up-to-date otherwise the purchase could be declined. You can check or update your account information at www.smartonegiftcard.com.

Returning Purchased Items

We recommend that you keep your Gift Card even after the entire amount is spent in case you need to return any purchased items. Some retailers require the card used for the purchase to issue a refund.

ATM Usage

smartOne Visa Gift Cards cannot be used at ATM’s or for cash advances.
